This month in a nutshell

  • How can international aviation reduce its carbon footprint in the face of the climate emergency? CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) is an international program established to limit the environmental impact of international flights. It requires airlines to offset the growth of their carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits. These credits fund ecological projects, such as reforestation or renewable energy initiatives.Starting in 2027, participation in CORSIA will be mandatory for all international flights.
  • Data centers are facing increasing sustainability challenges due to their high and continuous electricity and water consumption, which has been significantly amplified by the rise of Artificial Intelligence.According to the International Energy Agency, their global electricity demand could more than double by 2030, reaching approximately 945 TWh (equivalent to Japan's current electricity consumption), putting additional pressure on the grids and increasing short-term transition risks in certain regions. In response, regulations are increasingly pushing operators to link a portion of their consumption to decarbonized electricity sources (such as in Germany and China) or to strengthen reporting requirements regarding energy efficiency and sustainability, particularly in Europe and Australia.
  • Chile came back on the ESG bonds market in January 2026 with a €1.5 bn Long 10 years Sustainability-Linked Bond (SLB). It is the first-ever SLB to propose a biodiversity-linked Key Performance Indicator (KPI). Chile is the first one that has issued bonds on every possible sustainable formats (Green, Social, Sustainability and SLBs).
  • Italy also came back on the green bond market this January, with a new green BTP, for which the proceeds will be used to finance climate-related projects and infrastructures. The department of treasury is likely to come back to the green bond market this year and expect to issue between 9 and €13 bn green BTP totally, by the end of 2026.
